Apex Silver Mines Limited is a silver and zinc mining exploration and development company headquartered in Denver, Colorado. Apex Silver holds an extensive portfolio of exploration properties located primarily in Bolivia, Peru and Mexico. Its flagship San Cristobal silver-zinc-lead project is located in southwestern Bolivia and is one of the world's largest open-pit deposits of its kind. After forming in 1993, Apex went public in 1997 and is traded on the American Stock Exchange.

Mining Industry: Challenges
  • The Mining Company needed to standardize operations under one ERP software solution.
  • The Mining Company's corporate headquarters was using Solomon Software to manageits Financials and Accounting whereas the operational headquarters was running on an older version of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne.
  • There was no unified view of operations or a shared chart of accounts, which is critical for reporting, consolidations, and audit trails.
  • The disparate systems caused great painswithin audits and reporting and lacked any drill down functionality in Financials.
  • Wanted to expandits functionalityduring purchasing and inventory management.
  • They need to be able update the tax localizations in Bolivia.
  • Consolidating multiple companies with different fiscal date patterns.
  • Maintain system performance and latency.
  • Improve security across its entire system.

Mining Industry: Solution

  • Opted to unite the company under JD Edwards EnterpriseOne ERP software solution, which involved a new implementation at the Denver location and an upgrade at the Bolivia location.

Mining Industry: Results

  • Now able to manage operations in Bolivia and the U.S. on one system.
  • Have one chart of accounts with the same account structure, which has greatly improved the critical consolidation process and simplified reporting to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
  • Able to gain information faster with more control and flexibility.
  • Users can drill down on the Bolivian financials to the original point of entry, whereas they lacked this ability on the previous system.
